ゼミ研修旅行 − スペイン!

From September 11th to September 21st several members of Martin Parsons’ seminar group made a study trip to Spain. We spent the first and last nights of the trip in Madrid, but during the rest of the trip we were hosted by the University of Córdoba.

Day 1: Madrid

We had an uneventful trip to Madrid but arrived late in the evening, so after an excellent meal together, we took a short walk to see the Plaza Mayor.

Day 2: Travel to Cordoba

We got up early and took the AVE (新幹線) train to Cordoba. Not as fast or comfortable as in Japan, but still very good. We were able to stay in a beautiful dormitory connected to the University of Córdoba.
We went to the centre of the city with Dr. Víctor Pavón, a professor at the University of Córdoba, and wandered around the old Jewish quarter of the city and saw the amazing Mezquita/Cathedral. We walked across the Guadalquivir River on a bridge from Roman times to enjoy the view.

Day 3: School Visit/Tour of University of Cordoba

In the morning, we made a visit to Colegio Almedina, a bilingual school in Córdoba, arranged by Dr. Marta Dominguez. We were given an explanation of the educational philosophy of the school (bilingual, multiple intelligences) and a chance to meet some students from the high school. They recorded our visit on their homepage:http://colegioprivadoalmedina.com/visita-alumnos-osaka-japon/

In the evening, we were given a tour of the beautiful Faculty of Humanities by Dr. Victor Pavón. It is situated in an old hospital, which even has a haunted classroom! We also had a wonderful meal at a sidewalk restaurant.

Day 4: Tour of City Sports Department and Sports Facilities

In the morning, we were given a tour around a beautiful old building, with which houses Córdoba’s Sports Administration. The tour was conducted by a guide who dressed up to act out the roles of people from the history of the building. It was very funny and enjoyable. We learnt that the Emperor of Japan had stayed there once a long time ago. We were also able to meet the most important people from the Sports Administration in the city.
In the evening, we visited a local sports centre and met the local basketball team, watched them train and were presented with a mini-basketball each.

Day 5: Mezquita

Today, we visited the Mezquita/Cathedral, a beautiful UNESCO World Heritage site. It was very beautiful and moving. This was once one of the most important mosques in the Islamic world, but was later transformed into a Christian Cathedral.

Day 6: Olive Oil Producer/Zuheros

Today, we did study tour of an olive oil producer, Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe, in Baena, a small town near Cordoba. They produce high-quality olive oil, much of it organically grown. This company is also a co-operative of about 1,200 growers. They have a very environmentally responsible approach to their business, recycling water whenever possible, including providing water to the community after purifying it, and drying the olive pulp in the sun and then burning it to produce electricity. The entire business is very modern, very well regulated and extremely clean. It was very impressive. They export their oil to many countries, but not to Japan at this time.

After that we went to a small, beautiful town set in some mountains called Zuheros. It was extremely pretty, with a small castle built into the rocks jutting up on the edge of the town.

Day 7: Soccer in Cordoba

Today was Sunday, so most things in Cordoba were closed. Students did a little shopping, and we mostly relaxed until the evening when we went to see a professional soccer match between Córdoba CF and CD Tenerife. Córdoba won 2-0, and we appeared online: http://cordopolis.es/2017/09/17/grada-blanquiverde-cordoba-cf-tenerife-2-0/

Day 8 Beach in Malaga

Today we spent the day at the beach in Malaga. It was a lot of fun.

Day 9 Back to Madrid

We left early to get to Madrid. It was our last day in Spain, and people did different things. Shopping, a tour of Real Madrid’s stadium, or to the International Olive Oil Council to learn more about the world situation of olive oil.
Finally, in the evening we had our last dinner in Spain. Everyone talked about their favourite moments and remembered the trip fondly.

Day 10 Return to Nippon

Finally, our study trip was over, but it was a very enjoyable and interesting experience.
